The Virginian and a Special Announcement: This Week on TV CONFIDENTIAL
Television’s first 90-minute Western series will be our topic this week on TV CONFIDENTIAL, Tuesday, Dec. 2 beginning at 10:30pm ET , 7:30pm PT on Share-a-Vision Radio, KSAV.org.
Based on the classic novel by Owen Wister, The Virginian (NBC, 1962-1971) was a risky venture—it had already been adapted four times for the big screen by the time Universal Studios pitched the series to NBC. But with interest in Westerns on television at its peak at the time, NBC felt it was worth the gamble. As history shows, the decision paid off: The Virginian went on to become TV’s third-longest running Western series, second only to Gunsmoke and Bonanza.
Join Frankie Montiforte and me as we welcome Paul Green, author of A History of Television’s The Virginian, a comprehensive look at the creative history of The Virginian. If you grew up watching The Virginian, if you have a favorite episode, or are an admirer of Roy Huggins, James Drury or television Westerns in general, we invite you to join our conversation this Tuesday, Dec. 2 beginning at10:30pm ET , 7:30pm PT on KSAV.org. We’ll also have an announcement regarding some exciting changes to TV CONFIDENTIAL that will take place beginning in January. Phone number is (800) 407-KSAV (5728), email address is talk@tvconfidential.net.
